Start with the component, not the acronym
A plastic model kit can contain parts with different structural, visual and assembly roles. Before choosing a material, identify what the component must do, how it will be molded, whether it will be decorated, how it interfaces with other parts and what the end user is expected to do during assembly.

Five decisions that influence material choice
1. Part function
Separate cosmetic shells, structural interfaces, small details and other functions. A material decision for one component should not be copied across the entire kit without review.
2. Assembly method
State whether the kit is intended for snap-fit, adhesive assembly, a mixed approach or another method. The interface design and expected user handling affect the questions that engineering needs to answer.
3. Surface and decoration
Identify visible surfaces, color expectations, spray painting, Tampo Print and any other finish requirement. The material, molding condition and downstream process must be evaluated together.
4. Tooling and molding
Runner layout, gates, shrinkage, warpage risk and part ejection are connected to component geometry and material. These decisions belong in the DFM and tooling conversation.
5. Target market and documentation
Testing or documentation needs vary by product and sales market. Add the known requirements to the project brief so the manufacturing team can confirm what support is applicable.

- Material preferences and why they were selected
- Visible surface, color, finish and decoration requirements
- Expected quantity range, sales markets and required documentation
